CINEMA GUILD LAUNCHES SPARK,
NEW HOME VIDEO AND DIGITAL LABEL
FOR ARTS DOCUMENTARIES

SPARK will launch with titles "Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone" and
"The Woman with the Five Elephants" available on DVD February 21, 2012

New York, NY - The Cinema Guild is pleased to introduce SPARK, a new label dedicated to releasing quality documentaries on the arts. SPARK titles will be released on home video and/or digital and will cover a broad range of topics within the arts, including film, music, photography, painting, literature, architecture, dance, etc.

The first releases to go out under SPARK include "Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone", the raucous history of the pioneering all-Black rock band Fishbone, and "The Woman with the Five Elephants," winner of the Sterling Award at Silverdocs, a documentary that unravels the mystery behind the life and work of the world's greatest translator of Russian literature. Both titles will be available to own February 21, 2012.

"We're very excited about launching SPARK," commented Ryan Krivoshey, Director of Distribution, "There's a great demand for docs that tell compelling, inspiring stories about creativity and ingenuity and people who've enriched our lives and culture. With SPARK, we're going to find the best of these films and make them accessible to people wherever they want to watch them - home video, web, mobile, etc."

"Since we started our home video line several years ago, people have really responded to our DVD and Blu-ray releases," added Peter Kelly, Senior Sales Associate, Home Video, "and SPARK is an excellent opportunity to expand our label while retaining the same level of care and commitment our customers have come to expect. We plan to release between six and eight SPARK titles this year and increase to twelve next year."

The Cinema Guild is a leading distributor of independent, foreign and documentary films. Previous releases include Jeff Malmberg's "Marwencol," Manoel de Oliveira's "The Strange Case of Angelica," and Matt Porterfield's "Putty Hill."

More on The Woman with The Five Elephants
Winner of multiple festival awards, The Woman with the Five Elephants unravels the mystery behind the life and work of the world's greatest translator of Russian literature. A poetic, precise and revelatory investigation into language, meaning and the tides of history.

Svetlana Geier is one of literature's foremost translators, known primarily for her German translations of Dostoevsky's five great novels - referred to as the five elephants. But her great success has come with its share of pain. Born in Ukraine in 1923, she witnessed first?hand the impact of Stalin's purges. As a young girl, she watched Nazi forces occupy her country - and execute 30,000 Jews. By the end of the War, she and her mother were in a German labor camp for Eastern European prisoners. It was her unique gift for languages that ultimately saved her. But it forced her to make a choice that altered the course of her life. Interweaving the story of Geier's life with her literary work, the film traces the secret of this inexhaustibly hard?working woman and her craft.
